New Year, New Mami: Tips & Tricks
Congrats Mamita! You took the first step in pursuing your passion. I say it all the time, but the hardest part is getting started. I was once taught a quote by a ton of intelligent mujeres that may sound familiar to you. I don't think it's the same as the original poem or interpretation, but it's super powerful if you meditate on it.
"Excuses are the building blocks of nothing. They serve as monuments to our inadequacies. Those who excel in them seldom excel in anything else."
That is so good it should make you want to slap your mama with a tortilla. When I was in college I had to memorize this for weeks and it stuck with me forever. Don't get me wrong, I still complain. I still make excuses for myself. But because I have this mentality embedded in my work ethic, the excuses I make for myself don't win.
Nobody has time. I'm sitting here at work writing this in between calls. Believe me I know. And when I get home I'm going to have a million other things to do. But here I am, finding some time because this is what I care about. This is what my passion is telling me to do at this very moment. So be intentional.
A goal without a plan is just a wish. So let's plan homegirl!
It's normal to be passionate about more than one thing. You have to narrow it done though. You can be passionate about a lot of things, but what is your PURPOSE. For example, I am passionate about singing and making music. But my purpose is not to be a recording artist. After many crying sessions I realized I don't really want it. It's my hobby and my therapy, but I have no intention of wanting it to the point where I would sacrifice my love and family time. My purpose is to help other women follow their passion! What do you want to do for the rest of your life? What will be fulfilling from every aspect? Think about the bigger picture.
How the hell do you do it? YOU HAVE TO DO THE RESEARCH. This is where most people give up. Doing research on your passion will make you realize a lot. It can either make you feel incompetent because you don't know enough or you'll curse away all the work it will take to make it happen. If you think people are going to give you the building blocks to success you're sadly mistaken. You might get tid bits here and there, but it's ultimately up to you. All you have to do is register for google-university, youtube-
university, and pinterest-university. There's your secret.
Buy a mother-effing planner. I don't care how silly you think it is. I don't care if you're not a planner person and put reminders in your phone. Buy the planner and write in it. Cross things off. It will keep you organized and focused. It will drive you crazy if you don't cross them off and you'll be motivated to get them done. I also believe that the more you write something the down, the more real it becomes. Have you ever heard that writing things down or into your own words helps you study? Yeah, write that chorro down.
Post about it so that other people can hold you accountable. If you publicly post your "coming soon" and you don't follow through you're going to look silly. While you don't have to do anything for the gram, it does light a fire under your nalgas. The support from other people also helps tremendously. Whether it's love or viejas chismosas, you could still use the fuel.
JUST DO IT como dice el Nike. Nobody can want it more than you do. No one can help you more than you can help yourself. After you read this, get to it. The more you talk, the less you can accomplish. It's time to put your big girl chonies on and handle it mami! Your time is NOW.
